The honest answer about this word

I am going to give you the answer up front rather than build to it: in practice, cabinet resurfacing and cabinet refacing mean the same thing, and most shops in Northern Colorado use the two words interchangeably.

If a contractor tells you they resurface cabinets, they almost certainly mean they will replace your doors and drawer fronts and apply new veneer to the boxes. That is refacing. Same job, different word.

So why does the word exist separately? Partly marketing — "resurfacing" sounds descriptive and homeowners search for it. And partly because there is a narrower technical meaning, which is worth knowing about because it is the source of the one real risk here.

The narrow meaning, and why it matters

Used strictly, resurfacing refers to the box work specifically: applying new veneer or laminate to the visible exterior surfaces of your cabinet boxes and face frames. The doors are a separate line item.

That distinction almost never comes up in conversation, but it can absolutely show up in a quote. And if one shop's "resurfacing" price includes doors while another's does not, you are comparing two numbers that are not comparable, and the cheaper-looking bid may be substantially more expensive once doors are added.

This is the single practical reason to care about the terminology at all.

The one question that resolves it

Ask this, word for word:

"Does that price include new doors and drawer fronts, or is that a separate line?"

That is it. One question, asked of every shop that quotes you, and the ambiguity disappears completely. Any legitimate contractor will answer it immediately and without irritation. If someone gets evasive about it, that tells you something useful too.

While you are asking, I would add two more that catch the other common gaps: does the price include new hinges and drawer slides, and does it include hardware? Those are the other two line items that quietly move between "included" and "extra" from bid to bid.

What the work actually involves

Assuming the normal broad meaning — resurfacing as refacing — here is the sequence:

• Measurement and template of every door and drawer opening, since older cabinets are rarely perfectly consistent
• Door style, material and finish selection
• Removal of all existing doors and drawer fronts
• Prep of the box exteriors — cleaning, degreasing, light sanding so adhesive bonds properly
• Application of veneer or laminate to face frames, end panels and any exposed side
• Boring and mounting new hinges, installing new slides
• Hanging and adjusting the new doors and drawer fronts
• Trim, crown and toe kick to match if the scope includes it

Where the quality difference shows up

Resurfacing work varies enormously in quality, and the difference is almost entirely in two places.

The veneer material. There is real wood veneer with proper adhesive, and there is thin peel-and-stick vinyl. Both get called resurfacing. The first one is still tight in fifteen years. The second one lifts at the corners and near heat sources. Ask specifically what material goes on the boxes and what the warranty on it is.

The seam work. Good veneer work has seams you have to hunt for. Poor veneer work has seams you notice from across the room, especially at inside corners and where a panel meets a face frame. Ask to see photos of completed jobs, and look specifically at corners rather than at the pretty wide shots.

Is resurfacing right for your kitchen?

Same test as refacing, because it is the same job. Your boxes need to be structurally sound, and your layout needs to already work for you. Resurfacing changes what you see and nothing about how the kitchen functions.
